Why Mini Sessions and Little Kids Are a Perfect Match
I have seen photographers online say that mini sessions are never enough time. And honestly for certain types of shoots I get it. But for individual sessions with little kids? The mini session is absolutely the way to go. Fifteen minutes perfection.
Little ones do not have the patience for a long drawn out shoot and they should not have to. Getting in, connecting with the kiddo, capturing the magic, and letting them run free is the perfect formula. And this weekend proved it all over again.
The Little Girl Who Needed to Be the Photographer First
Our first little graduate was not feeling it right away. And honestly I respect that completely. We shoot at a location in Millbury that has a playground right next to our setup and that is fully intentional. It is a safe space for families to meet, it gives kids a reason to be excited about coming, and on the days when I need to bring my own little ones along I know they have somewhere safe to play while I work.
On this particular day though the playground was calling her name before the camera was. And it was a hot day so we did not want her getting sweaty before we even started. So we got creative.
We took turns. She used the camera. I used the camera. Back and forth until she forgot she was being photographed at all. And then the genuine smiles started coming and we wrapped up her entire session well within the fifteen minutes. Some of my favorite photos from the day came from that in between energy.
The Little Girl Who Was Born for the Camera
Our second little graduate needed zero convincing. She was ready, she was present, and she absolutely owned every pose I gave her.
One of my favorite things to do with little girls is ask them to be supermodels. Pop that hip. Show me the sass. They light up instantly and suddenly you have a tiny movie star in front of your lens having the time of her life. The photos were incredible and the smiles were completely real.
A Special Place in My Heart
I will photograph any graduation. High school, college, you name it. But there is something about preschool and kindergarten that just gets me. Maybe it is because I have a five year old of my own and a newborn at home. Having little ones gives you a completely different communication toolkit when it comes to working with kids and I think it shows in the photos.
These sessions in Millbury were a reminder of why I love this job.
